Welcome to the "Sea Lab Skimmer!" This electronic newsletter is replacing our former publication "Tidings," and we hope you will enjoy learning about the different programs and activities of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab in this format. There's always something happening here at the Sea Lab, and we hope to bring you frequent updates of the latest activities.

 

Discovery Day at the DI Sea Lab - April 19, 10am to 2pm

This fun-filled family event includes a huge variety of environmentally-themed children's activities; an Open House at the Research Facilities of the DISL where the public meets the scientists and graduate students to see their ongoing research projects; and FREE CHILDREN'S ADMISSION to the Estuarium, the aquarium at the DISL and a designated Coastal America Coastal Ecosystem Learning Center. Cocktails with the Critters, A Fundraiser for the DISL Foundation - April 24

Mobile Manatees Sighting Network Work Update

The Mobile Manatees program has focused on defining where manatees live and what they eat while visiting Mobile Bay and adjacent waters. The program also is dedicated to sharing data with other researchers, managers, and the public. (READ MORE)

Boy Scouts - Oceanography Badge at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab

Recently eight Boy Scouts from Troop 28 (Mobile Area Council) visited DISL as they continued to work toward earning the Oceanography Merit Badge. The scouts had previously participated in an intensive classroom session with Dr. Monty Graham where they learned the basics of oceanography including the properties of seawater (salinity, density, and chemical composition); currents and tides; plate tectonics; ocean basins; the characteristics of waves; and marine food webs. DISL Educator Greg Graeber Honored
