Educator Suzanne Seagraves

Imagine getting up early in the morning to load up a bus with enthusiastic kindergarten students PLUS fifth and sixth graders PLUS parent/chaperones. Imagine riding four hours from Montgomery to Dauphin Island with all those students. Imagine a full day of field and lab activities. Imagine the sleepy, tired ride home.

Now imagine doing that every day for a WEEK! That’s what dedicated educator Suzanne Seagraves did for her students at the Dannelly School in Montgomery. Ms. Seagraves has been an educator for over 20 years; for 15 of those years, she’s been bringing students down to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. "This is the best field trip they’ve ever had,"

she says enthusiastically, despite the rigors of travelling. "You can teach students in the classroom, but there’s no substitute for letting them see and experience biology
first hand. Here, they can use all their senses to touch the animals, to smell the ocean, to hear the seabirds. They’ll never forget it."

Not only does she have enough energy to last the week, she has created an award-winning Web site at www.geocities.com/sseagraves. This site has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognition, most recently from USA Today and Education Today.

We salute Suzanne Seagraves for her dedication and tireless efforts. Her students, and all those fortunate enough to meet her, appreciate her skill and commitment to giving her best for environmental education.
