Thanks to Dr. Ken Heck, the Sea Lab now has a cooperative working relationship in the distant land of Finland. With his former postdoctoral student, Dr. Johanna Matilla, who is currently working at the Department of Biology, Environmental and Marine Biology & Husö Biological Station, at Åbo Akademi University, Dr. Heck has begun an exchange program for graduate and undergraduate students through the development of a joint course, operating at both institutions, open to students from both institutions.

This September, graduate students from the Sea Lab will journey to Finland for two and a half weeks to participate in a Field Marine Science Course, accompanied by Dr. Heck and Dr. John Valentine. Shortly after they return, graduate students from Åbo Akademi University will come here, continuing their discussion of scientific papers and exploring research ideas.

Additionally, the faculty research staff will have greater opportunity to develop scientific ideas together by exchanging research reports, university publications and conference proceedings. The cooperative agreement will also allow each institution’s faculty greater ease in making extended visits at each other’s facility.

"This is an exciting development for both institutions," said Dr. Heck. "Besides firmly establishing the Sea Lab in the sphere of international research, it is an excellent opportunity to share research ideas and educational facilities between two distant marine labs. We’re looking forward to what this cooperative exchange will bring; the intellectual stimulation of such a program is foremost on our list."
