Versatile, creative and enthusiastic – what other team of educators could lead a class of kindergarteners through a touch lab in the morning and take a group of Elderhostel participants on a beach walk in the afternoon? Founded in 1975, the Discovery Hall Programs (DHP) bases its many programs on the principle that hands-on education will lead to life-long learning behavior. Using the fascinating world of marine science, students and teachers are given tools to impart the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic in the younger grades, while older students study oceanography, marine ecology, animal behavior and much more. Recognized as a Center for Ocean Science Excellence in Education, the DHP is a leader in K-12 and public outreach education in the nation. DHP Chair Dr. John Dindo credits his team’s success to their dedication and refusal to rest on their laurels. “We’re always searching for even better methods to teach the ways of the water to our students, educators and the public,” he states.
