Saturday, September 18, 2004 - 17th Annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup

In addition to tarnishing the natural beauty of our state, marine debris (trash and waste discarded in the water) kills thousands of marine mammals, sea birds and turtles each year. It also damages fishing nets, fouls propellers, and clogs water intakes.

The Coastal Cleanup is a chance to take pride in our unique and treasured waterway system. Last year, 3,828 volunteers cleaned up 303 miles of shoreline and rid our waterways of a whopping 83,000 pounds of trash!

Gather up your group today - your family, church group, Boy Scout or Girl Scout group.  Or come out on your own and make new friends! Volunteers receive a t-shirt, hugger, decal, and drinks in thanks for their participation - not to mention the satisfaction of keeping Alabama beautiful!

October 14 - 17, 2004 - 1st Annual Coastal Alabama Bird Festival

Saving stopover habitat on the northern Gulf Coast for neotropical migrants has often been a neglected part of avian conservation. Unfortunately for the birds, because humans love the Gulf Coast too, less stopover habitat is available for the birds each year. To help address this issue, all proceeds from the Alabama Coastal BirdFest will be used to purchase and improve habitat for birds on the Alabama Gulf Coast.

The Alabama Coastal BirdFest will be held each year in the fall when many species are migrating south to Alabama or through the state to Central and South America. Coastal Alabama offers barrier islands, estuaries, wide expanses of salt marshes, tidal rivers, woodlands, freshwater wetlands, savannas, and more. Our location makes this an excellent time of the year for birding, and the weather is typically beautiful. Coastwide birding trips will feature the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail, a series of loops that describes the birding spots most frequented by Alabama birders.

The Alabama Coastal BirdFest includes guided birding trips, great Southern hospitality, afternoon seminars, children’s activities, educational exhibits, evening keynote lectures, and a few workshops. Come let us show you the wild and beautiful Alabama Coast and join us for some spectacular birding and a wonderful time!
