2004 Shell Oil Teaching Fellow
Article by Carlie Kollath, Public Relations Intern

Kawanna instructs in the perfect plankton throw.

KaWanna Duncan, a senior biology major at the University of South Alabama, was the recipient of the 2004 Shell Oil Foundation Minority Teaching Scholarship.  Having devoted her studies to medical courses, KaWanna had little personal exposure to the field of marine science.  But by the end of two months, the student who had never even picked up a fishing pole found the skills and confidence to lead fishing trips and outreach programs to children in the South Alabama area.

“Before I came, I couldn’t even identify a fish,” she said, laughing. “But, now I know the names, how they eat and their class and phylum. Being with the students helped me learn a lot.”

Duncan added, “I will take back all the things I’ve learned here about plants and animals and share the information with everyone.  I want to try to get them interested in marine biology - at least trigger something in their minds to get them interested in marine biology when they hadn’t thought about it before.”
