Fulbright Scholars

Established in 1946, the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship Program provides students and faculty the opportunity to study and conduct research in an international venue, exchanging cultural and academic ideas.

Staci Lewis

The Sea Lab currently has two Fulbright students in its midst, although one is now in Barbados.  Staci Lewis, former lab technician with Dr. Rich Aronson and currently a DISL research associate, is examining dietary shifts in fireworms following the loss of coral, which is their primary food source.  Staci is now at the Bellairs Research Institute in Barbados.

Nadia Bood

Also studying with Dr. Aronson is Master's student and Belizean native Nadia Bood, now on her second Fulbright; her first provided her the means to earn an undergraduate degree at the University of South Alabama.  "My research entails the investigation of recovery rates and resilience of coral assemblages on managed and unmanaged reefs in Belize," explains Nadia.  "In 1998, Belize's reefs were significantly impacted (high loss of live coral cover) by two synergistic events - mass bleaching due to elevated sea surface temperature, and Hurricane Mitch. This study is aimed at determining whether impacted reefs are recovering since these events and whether protection status plays a role on the resilient character of such reefs."
