Mobile Bay Caregiver

Mr. Garland Sims on the Fairhope Pier before Hurricane Katrina.  Although there are a lot of "No's" on that list, one "Yes" he would advocate is "Yes, cherish our waters!"

Mr. Garland Sims of Fairhope, Alabama has had a long-time love of Mobile Bay.  When the Dauphin Island Sea Lab first started its Baywatch water quality monitoring program in the early 1990’s , Garland was one of the first to volunteer and become a monitor.  Dissatisfied with the primitive equipment used by our program, he went to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agency to ask for and receive state-of-the-art YSI monitoring equipment.

For many years Garland has been a caregiver for Mobile Bay, faithfully calling in his data to the Sea Lab and Alabama Department of Environmental Management.  Garland has retired from his volunteer monitoring position and takes wonderful photographs of the Bay that he loves.  The Dauphin Island Sea Lab wishes to thank Garland for his dedication to the health of Mobile Bay and for his continuing efforts to make the waters clean and pleasurable for all creatures - humans, birds, and aquatic animals.
