In Honor of A Cherished
Friend
The DISL and the Department of Marine Sciences at the
University of South Alabama (USA) were honored to host Dr.
Robert T. Paine, Zoology Professor Emeritus, University of
Washington, as the 12th Distinguished Wiese Lecturer. Dr.
Paine addressed a standing-room only crowd at the Mitchell
Center at USA on “Lessons at Low Tide: Biodiversity on the
Rocky Shore.” Dr. Paine is a member of the National Academy
of Sciences and has received many honors and awards during
his long and illustrious career, including the Sewall Wright
Award from the American Society of Naturalists, and being
named Eminent Ecologist by the Ecological Society of
America.

Dr. Paine also conducted several workshops at the DISL
during his stay.
The Wiese
Lecture Series is endowed by a generous gift from the late
Peter Wiese and his wife Marty of Fairhope, Alabama,
longtime philanthropists and environmental activists. Each
year the series brings an eminent scientist here to interact
with students and faculty and present a lecture for the
public on a topic of general interest in marine science.
Dr. Ken
Heck, chair of University Programs at DISL, commented, “We
were thrilled that Bob Paine was the Wiese Lecturer this
year. He has had a deep and lasting influence on all of us
who work in community ecology, and he definitely inspired
our students.”
During the
public lecture, Dr. John Dindo gave an introduction on the
history of the Wiese Lecture series and a background on its
benevolent sponsor, Pete Wiese. Mrs. Marty Wiese attended,
and was surprised and moved to learn that the new addition
to the research facility at the Sea Lab will be named Wiese
Hall, in honor of our cherished friend. Wiese Hall is
expected to open in 2006.
