Governor Riley Declares 2006 the Year of the Outdoors
Dr. John Dindo Named Outdoor Ambassador

Grab your fishing poles, hiking boots, swimsuits and cameras – 2006 is the Year of the Outdoors. A recent press release from the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel (ABTT) states, “According to a recent survey by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Alabamians spent $2.3 billion on wildlife-associated recreation, and almost 1.6 million residents and nonresidents fished, hunted and/or watched wildlife in Alabama. Outdoor recreation contributed to the 8 percent increase in Alabama tourism dollars in 2004.”

  Dr. John Dindo

Fifteen individuals were chosen from the state to represent the beauty of the outdoors to fellow Alabamians and out-of-state visitors. These Outdoor Ambassadors were selected for their knowledge of the region, their fervor for nature and their enthusiasm to communicate this zeal to others. The DISL’s Dr. John Dindo was named as one of the Ambassadors from the Gulf Coast Region.

This acknowledgement only affirms Dr. Dindo’s many accomplishments over the years as a marine scientist and educator at the DISL. The ABTT website (www.800alabama.com) offers the following description:

An ornithology specialist, Dr. Dindo was one of the prime resources in the creation of the Coastal Birding Trail. He also created and continues to manage an award-wining K-12 program at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab named Discovery Hall. The program introduces more than 12,000 students and teachers annually to the principles of marine science and conservation. The Estuarium, the Sea Lab’s public aquarium, is also his brainchild. As an outdoorsman, Dr. Dindo is an avid hunter and fisherman, frequenting the delights of the Delta and the waters of the Gulf as often as he can. He takes great pleasure in interacting with the public on one of his famous tours of the Gulf of Mexico and the Mobile Delta.

Dr. Dindo receives the Outstanding Alumni Award from Dean Lowell Wenger of UAB's School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

In an additional recognition, Dr. Dindo also recently received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, where he earned his master’s and Ph.D. in biology from UAB in 1979 and 1991, respectively.

To top it all off, Dr. Dindo was also profiled on the front page of the Mobile Register’s Living Section. Recognition long overdue, claim his many admirers.
