The New
York Times calls Dr. Daniel Pauly “an iconoclaststic
fisheries scientist…who is so decidedly global in his life
and outlook that he is nearly a man without a country.”
This world-renowned scientist will be featured as the 13th
Annual Wiese Distinguished Lecturer this fall, and the
public is invited to attend his talk “Global Trends in
World Fisheries: Impact on Marine Ecosystems and Food
Security” on Wednesday, November 1, 7pm at the John Counts
Room at the Mitchell Center, University of South Alabama
(USA). The lecture is presented by the Department of Marine
Sciences, USA, and the Sea Lab.
Dr. Pauly is currently the Director of the Fisheries Centre
at the University of British Columbia and one of the
creators of FishBase (www.fishbase.org), a website with
information on over 27,000 species of fish. He is widely
considered one of the the world’s most prolific and cited
living fisheries scientist. Dr. Bob Shipp, Chair of the
Department of Marine Sciences at USA, states “Dr. Pauly has
become an outspoken and at times controversial critic of
modern fishing practices. He has suggested that marine
fishers will leave little but jellyfish for future
generations to eat, and he has blamed the Chinese government
for inflating fish catch statistics and helping obscure a
global overfishing crisis.”
