Winter Manatee Activity

Several unexpected manatee sightings in late 2008 and early 2009 kept the Mobile Manatee Sighting Network (MMSN) busy from Thanksgiving through the New Year.  Three manatees were spotted outside of the regular sighting season (April-November), when waters are colder and animals are in danger from cold stress. DISL Reorganized

Marine Scientist Mike Dardeau will now head up a new department of the DISL that will combine the Plant Operations and Vessel Operations.

The Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) structure had not been seriously altered in almost a quarter of a century. It is unlikely that an organizational chart suitable for 25 people can effectively work for 125. Consequently, the first actions of the new director have been aimed at creating a more efficient, but hopefully equally productive, organization. There is also a transparent effort to provide effective transition for several programs that will see retiring leadership over the next couple of years. (read more)

We consider our Estuarium docents the backbone of our aquarium.  Without their generous donation of time and knowledge, we could not operate as well as we do.  Their enthusiasm for our coastal habitats make them wonderful teachers for our visitors and students. (read more)

2009 Summer Educational Programs at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab Now Open for Enrollment

The Dauphin Island Sea Lab, located on a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico, offers one of the most extensive and renowned summer marine science programs in the nation. With programs for everyone from graduate students to K-12 teachers to middle school students, the Sea Lab combines excellence in education with an ideal location for studying and experiencing marine life.
