Visiting Student from China Conducts Research at DISL
Dr. Ron Kiene

By now Cheng-xuan Li has become a familiar smiling face around Marine Science Hall, even if her name might not be familiar to all.  Most people probably know her as "Caroline," the English name she took when she arrived from China last August.  Caroline is a Ph. D. student at the Ocean University of China in Qingdao and she is spending a year as a visiting student in Dr. Ron Kiene's lab at DISL.

Her Ph.D. research is focused on the biological cycling of DMS and DMSP, two sulfur compounds that Dr. Kiene also studies.  She came to Kiene's lab to learn new techniques and to experience a different environment.  She quickly learned the techniques used in Kiene's lab and carried out an impressive series of experiments, putting in many long hours in the laboratory and at the computer.

Caroline's experiments have already produced important results.  Among other things, she found that not all the DMSP that is measured in seawater is available to the bacteria. This finding has important implications for understanding the role of DMSP in the global sulfur cycle. This is Caroline's first visit to the USA and she has made it a very productive one.
