The Sea Lab was recently awarded a $44,000 Kresge Endowment Grant through the Community Foundation of South Alabama. This grant, which will be matched 3:1 by the fundraising efforts of the Sea Lab,
will result in an eventual endowment fund of $166,666.

This first-ever endowment grant has prompted the initial steps toward establishing a separate Dauphin Island Sea Lab Foundation.

The DISL Foundation will support the educational and research mission of marine science at the Sea Lab, hopefully moving the institution to some measure of financial security, allowing it to maintain operations and expand its programs. A goal of $1 million over five years has been established.

Sea Lab employees have already given magnanimously to the Foundation, with a participation level of 100%, and over $10,000 pledged through 2002!

More information will be forthcoming about the Foundation soon.
